I just posted a new article on my blog which shares some easy tips for
getting better results searching online.

There's a myth that people who grew up with computers are all experts, and that
older people are automatically worse. This isn't true!

A recent study showed that 75% of college students didn't know how to
use a search engine -- a fundamental computer skill everyone should have.

This blog post includes an "infographic" (informational image) which gives you
a bunch of useful tips for how to use a search engine the right way.

I didn't make this infographic myself, but wanted to share it with you because I
think it could be helpful.

I have to warn you, while I think most of the information is spot-on (and in fact,
most of the information is covered in the search engine lessons of my easy
Internet course) I do disagree with one thing.

Finally understand the computer term "driver" in Plain English

In this email I'm going to help you understand the computer term
"driver". Like so many computer terms, driver isn't very well
understood by most people. And in many cases, isn't understood at all.

Of course, as always, remember that's not a criticism -- if you didn't
understand what a driver was before this, it's just because it was never
explained to you the right way before.

Let's see what I can do to fix that.

A driver is a special type of software that's needed to get different pieces
of hardware to work right with your computer.

Didn't make sense yet? Bear with me.

First off, just to make sure we're all on the same page, let me briefly
explain the difference between "hardware" and "software".

It's actually pretty simple -- "hardware" refers to all of the physical pieces
of equipment, like your mouse, your computer's screen (or monitor), the
hard drive, etc.

"Software" is all of the parts of the computer that you can't really see or
touch. Software would include things like Microsoft Word, your email
program, Windows or the Mac OS, plus all of your personal files like letters,
photos, music, and more.

One way to think about it is like this: hardware is like your brain, the
physical part of your body, while software is like your mind or your
thoughts -- the non-physical part of yourself.

Software runs on hardware, just like your thoughts "run on" your brain.

Make sense? Now let's talk more specifically about drivers.

Here's the easy way to think about what a driver is. Imagine that every
piece of hardware, including your printer, your mouse, and so on, speaks
a different language.

So one speaks French, another one speaks Italian, another one Cantonese,
etc.

So when you plug in a new printer and turns it on, your computer says "hi"
and the printer replies in a foreign language the computer doesn't understand.

So it needs an interpreter.

And when I say interpreter, I mean just like in the real world, like if a foreign
diplomat comes to the country but doesn't speak the local language. They
need an interpreter to help them communicate with the locals.

That, basically speaking, is what a driver is -- an interpreter that helps
your computer talk to a specific piece of equipment. And (generally speaking)
you need a different interpreter for each piece of equipment that you hook
up to the computer.

Make sense?

Now in some cases, the driver may be "preinstalled" on your computer
(in other words, the computer already has the interpreter ready and waiting
in case it's needed) and in other cases, it needs to either be installed from
a CD, or downloaded off the Internet, and then installed on the computer.

But either way, the computer needs that driver before it can talk to the
printer or whatever other type of device you may have hooked up to the
computer.

Well, I messed up! (read this if you had problems with lessons)

A few days ago I sent out an email letting you know that I'm giving away a set of
easy computer lessons for free. Unfortunately some people got confused and need help
so what I did was break it into 4 steps and recorded 4 short video lessons to help you
understand how to access the computer course material on my site.

Before I summarize the four steps, let me address one common question I was asked
by a number of people:

Yes, the first set of lessons is 100% free, and no you definitely don't need to buy anything
to get the set of free lessons.

I guess I wasn't clear enought for everyone, and I apologize if you misunderstood.

I also went through and did some major reworking of my site to make it easier to
sign into the site and to locate all of the lessons by adding a new member area
which you can get to with one click from basically any page on my website.

Let me break it down into the four steps. It's worth mentioning that steps 2-4 are
the same whether you just request the free lessons, or if you decide to order as well.

Step 1) Request free lessons by entering your email in the form on the website,
OR place an order

Step 2) My system automatically sends you an email with a special link and instructions
             on how to access the course material. You have to click the link in the email
             to unlock the lessons you've asked for.

             If you don't see the email within a few minutes, check your "Junk" or "Spam"
             email folder.

Step 3) After clicking the link in the email you will be taken to a registration page on
my site where you can create a free account. By using the special link it will
unlock the lessons for your account.

              Note: if you get more than one set of lessons, you'll get one email per course
              and you will need to click the link in each email, BUT you don't need to make
              a new account. Just sign back in with the account you already made after you
              click the link and it will unlock each new set of lessons automatically.

Step 4)   Once you've created your account you can find links to all of the course material
              that you have unlocked by going to any page of WorthGodwin.com, look at the top
              of the page for "Computer Training Member Area" and click that.

              In the Member Area you will be able to see on the left side if you are signed in.
              If not, you can sign in with the username and password you created in step 3.
              As soon as you sign in, you will see yellow boxes appear with the title of each
              course you have access to. Just click the title of the course to see the list of
              lessons.

But that's basically it. You request the lessons, check your email, click the link in the email,
create a free account, then get to the lessons at any time by using the Member Area link
you'll find at the top of just about every single page of my site (signing in if needed).

The move to a blog and a new server has taken most of my time (all of it if you ask my wife) over the past 4 or 5 weeks, which has greatly limited our ability to create new content for you, and for that I apologize. With that said, I would really like to add a few writers in hopes of expanding our offerings to our visitors (both in scope and frequency).

Hello Mohsin,

We are in the process of completing the move of DCT from static pages to a blog type content management system. This email is a test of our new email system. I apologize for the intrusion and appreciate your understanding!

DCT has a new format. You can check it out at DavesComputerTips.com. Start checking the blog and forum for new contests and free software!

The newsletter also has a new and improved format, which you should see here if you're reading this in an html capable client. Our first "real" email should start appearing in your inbox toward the middle of this week.

This month is our 5th anniversary and represents an important milestone for DCT and all of you also. The new format has created quite a bit of excitement here at DCT Central! We have a few things to tidy up over the next week, but the majority of the hard work is over. We hope you enjoy it!

Hello Mohsin,

We've just finished the August newsletter, but first I would like your
opinion. We've been discussing the possibility of changing the DCT
site to a blog format while maintaining the forum alongside in its'
present form.

The benefits to us are many, but the most important is an easier to
maintain site and the ability to get information to the user in a more
timely manner - there would be no need to aggregate everything into a
newsletter. A side benefit would be a much easier to manage
infrastructure.

The emails will continue (maybe even in an html form), but would
contain a weekly, or monthly, highlight of blog content so you can
stay up-to-date. An RSS feed would also be available for those who
prefer that method.

It will be a huge undertaking to move 5 years of connect, but in the
end I believe it will position us to be more responsive and provide a
better service to the readers!

I don't want to charge ahead with a big change without hearing from
you, so I've created a forum topic where I would appreciate you
posting your thoughts and discussing the change. Please post your

The video lesson I'm sharing with you today is not for everybody.

A lot of the people who come to me for help learning computers wish
they could feel more confident and empowered, but doubt they can
do it. If that sounds familiar, this video is for you.

This isn't a regular computer lesson, but if you watch and listen
and get the message in the video, it can make computers (or
anything you want to achieve in life) much easier -- just like that.

I'll also open up and share one of my greatest challenges with you,
and tell you a story about a dumb thing my little brother and I did
when we were young and how something I learned from it as
an adult helped me do what used to seem to be impossible.

New lesson: How an often-overlooked menu item can really save you

I've uploaded this easy video lesson to my site which you should watch.
This Plain English lesson reveals the importance of a specific menu option
which you find in a lot of programs but which many people don't really use right.

What I'm talking about is "Save As" which you find in Microsoft Word,
email programs, photo editors and many other programs.

I've found that a lot of people have seen the option but don't really
understand what it's for and why it can be so important to use it
and to use it the right way.

The lesson starts with the basics but we'll also cover a very important
tip that can make your life a LOT easier if you use it, especially if you're a writer
or anyone working on more complicated or longer projects where you
end up making a lot of changes to a file over time.

But even if you only do basic stuff on your computer, this lesson has
a bunch of valuable tips and concepts that you should learn.

copies of the video, one for Microsoft Windows PCs, and the other
for Apple's Mac computers. Just click the button to watch the

Read the story of this student who is becoming more confident with his computer

Well the sale went live not too long ago and
things have started out with a bang, but remember it's far
from over so you still have a chance to save.

I wanted to share with you the story of one of my

the UK and discovered my site some time ago and who
was kind enough to write me and let me know how things

I have to admit I absolutely love hearing back from my
students since I have put so much time, effort, and care

TV rots your brain but search engines help make you smart (free computer lesson)

This 18 minute lesson on how to use a search engine the *right* way
and get the results you want will make you smarter! Read on to find out
why...

They say TV rots your brain, and while I can't say whether that's
true or not, it seems scientists at the University of California in
Los Angeles have discovered that using a search engine can
actually make you smarter.

But here's the kicker -- it only works if you understand what you're
doing!

Fortunately for you, I'll be sharing a step-by-step video lesson
with you today which will teach you a few things about using a
search engine to find what you want on the Internet, including
how to avoid a common mistake I see a huge number of people
making. By the end of the lesson you may not be an expert, but
you'll understand it all better than a lot of people do.

I'm sharing this 18 minute video lesson to give you a taste of
just one of the huge number of quick, easy lessons you'll get on

As you know if you've read my recent emails, I've sunk so much
time and money into developing this business to help people like
you with their computer challenges that the last time I saw my
family was three years ago.

Now my little brother Shay (who I mention in the video lesson)
is getting married and I need to be able to fly 2,500 miles
to attend the wedding. To make this happen I am pulling out

But let me finish my thoughts on this study about how learning
the computer can help stimulate your brain and help you keep
your mind sharp, and then I'll share the link to the lesson.

The scientists in the study tested volunteers between the ages
of 55 and 76, having them wear "functional MRI" caps, which
gave them a reading on brain activity. While the subjects
were wearing the caps, they were tested while doing web searches,
and they were also tested while reading books.

Half of the people in the study had experience using the Internet
and were knowledgeable users, while half were not.

What they found was that while reading books, everyone had

increased brain activity in brain regions that control language,
reading, memory and visual abilities. This is pretty much to
be expected, but it was the next part of the study that was
most interesting, and the reason I'm writing this.

What they found when the test subjects were doing web searches
was split very dramatically between the two groups (the
experienced, and the inexperienced computer users).

It seems the experienced computer users showed a lot more
brain activity than the inexperienced users, which means using
the computer (and maybe searching the Internet specifically)
can exercise your brain and keep it sharp and working well,
but only if you understand the computer and are experienced
with it.

Remember, the brain is like a muscle -- the more you use it the
better it works and the healthier it is.

So using the computer can make you smarter!

The easiest way to learn computers is with easy video lessons.

Below is a link to a 20 minute lesson specifically on how to

understand Google (and other search engines) and to get better

results when you use it.

Why I'm proud of Dad on this Father's Day

Scam steals $4,000 from Worth's father! (video)

I'm writing today to help you avoid a widespread scam which
unfortunately cost my parents $4,000 of their retirement savings
because my 83 year old father was tricked.

Those of you who've been on my newsletter for a while now may
remember me mentioning my father before. My family is kind of
spread out these days - my parents live about 5,000 miles from me
in New York State (where I'm from), and my younger brother Shay
lives about half-way between me and my parents, in California.

The family unfortunately doesn't get to see each other very often, but
we're still looking out for each other.

My brother Shay ended up on the Los Angeles news because he decided to
take matters into his own hands because the police sat by and did nothing
while a group of scammers took advantage of people, including our dad.

While my parents lost a lot of money, it could have been worse if Shay
hadn't done something.

The way the scam works is a person is told they've won a lottery, but
they have to pay a "processing fee" before they can get the millions
they've supposedly won.

It's not a new scam, and it's something you see offline and online both.

You probably remember the video I shared with you a week ago that exposes
the dangers of the online "trojan" scams (if you tried to watch and couldn't,
you should try again because I've uploaded a second copy that should fix it).

In that video one of the several important things I taught you was that
scams take advantage of strong emotions like fear or greed to trick you.

That's exactly what the so-called "Jamaican Scams" (the lottery scam my
dad fell for) do -- they get people so excited about money they think
they've won they don't stop to wonder why they'd have to pay for a prize.

So remember to stop and think "What's the catch?" before responding to
messages of fear or messages promising money for nothing.

And I hope you stay smart, and stay safe.

Answers about that important video I sent you

A few days ago I shared a quick 8 minute video with you that
exposes a widespread threat which can affect anyone *no matter
what computer type* you use.

I got many thank-you emails from people, which I very much appreciate,
and I also got some questions. I wanted to share one with you that is
an example of common questions people have:

First off, Sab, you did the right thing by getting out of there
when you ran across that scam website. You didn't have to
shut the computer down, but better safe than sorry.
Your MacBook should be perfectly OK because you did this.

The best thing anyone can do if they run across a website like
the ones I describe and show you in the video is to close
your web browser and don't click *anything* on the page
or any windows which may pop up since many of those
sites will try to install the trojan even if you click cancel.

On a Windows PC you can hold down the ALT key and then
press the F4 key (not the letter F and the number 4, but the
F4 key at the top of the keyboard) and release both.

On one of Apple's Mac computers (desktop or laptop) you
can hold down the Command key and then type Q (as in Quit)
and release both.

In either case, this keyboard shortcut should close the program
safely and will prevent you from accidentally clicking on the
wrong thing.

**Do you need to install an antivirus program**

Well, I've been saying for a long time that while there are
a vastly smaller number of dangerous programs which target Macs,
no computer is completely safe.

The attitude of "superiority", or feeling invincible is exactly what
those scammers are trying to take advantage of. Mac users are
safer than Windows users in terms of the number of threats out there,
as there are literally ZERO viruses circulating for Mac OS X but
it's dangerous to feel immune.

Think of it this way: you can drive a safe model of car on a road
that has fewer drivers and so has less likelihood of an accident happening,
but it doesn't excuse driving recklessly without wearing a seat belt.

All Windows users MUST use a good, up-to-date antivirus program.
I've been suggesting a program called Kaspersky Internet Security
for my Windows students for years now.

Kaspersky also has a Mac version (look under the "All Products" section)
which I've tested and am pretty happy with.

Another advantage to using a Mac is the (relatively) recent addition of
The Mac App Store -- this is built right into new Macs and is a free
update to any Mac running OS X 10.6 (a.k.a. "Snow Leopard") and
will also be included in the upcoming 10.7 "Lion".

The Mac App Store is a "walled garden" which means that Apple inspects
each program before allowing it to be included in the store. While
not every program written for Macs is available in the store yet,
it's a great place to shop because you know that what you buy there
is safe.

Anyway, I've got dinner waiting for me so I'd better run. I just wanted

You guys have it easy these days (read to find out why)

I've been helping make computers easy for people for
about 16 years now as a professional, but have been
an avid computer user for well over a quarter century
at this point.

There are a lot of people who think computers are
hard to use, and need my help to make heads or tails
of them.

It's not your fault if you feel this way, but I wanted to
give you a quick "computer history" lesson to help you
understand that computers are in most ways *much*
easier than when I started using them, and to help you
understand they're only getting easier as time goes by.

I also wanted to share a website with you that lets you
look into the Internet of the past to see what it was like
before the days of the World Wide Web - what I used to
use back in the day before most people had even heard
of email.

When I got my first computer back in the 1980s, it didn't
come with a modem. I had to spend hundreds of dollars
to buy a dialup modem which ran at "1200 bps" - that
number may not mean anything to you, but in relative
terms compared to a modern cable or DSL modem it
was like walking compared to driving a fast car at top
speed.

VERY slow!

Not only was it slow, it was a "dumb modem" which
meant that every single time I used it I had to manually
configure it to work properly, something I had to do
by memorizing and typing in a string of letters and
numbers that would look like gibberish to most people.

Once I was connected to the Internet I didn't have
bookmarks or search engines to find things, I had to
know the exact address of a site I wanted to connect
to, then type another special command to connect to it.

Everything was done by typing commands and you
often needed to have a great deal of knowledge about
exactly how your computer worked "under the hood"
to know the correct commands to type, and if you
typed one letter or number wrong it just wouldn't work!

A far cry from today where you can grab a mouse and
double-click on an icon and then from there click a link
or a button to get where you want, or at most type in
what you're looking for in a search engine.

If you want to get an idea of what it used to look like
back in the day, there's a website which simulates the
Internet as it was about 20 years ago before the Web
came along, when just about the only people using the
Internet were complete computer geeks like myself.

Go to: http://telehack.com/

and you'll see what it was like. You have to type
commands to get around (a list of commands is shown
when you arrive) followed by the Enter or Return key
to "send" the command.

I'm just sharing this with you for fun, and to give you
a little perspective on how things have changed. The
good news is, things are generally getting easier as time
goes by.

On the down side, of course, we do face a lot more
potential threats and risks to our privacy and security
on the modern Internet than was around back then.

In my next lesson I'll tell you about one type of threat
that can put you at risk no matter what kind of
computer you use (yes, including Apple Macs).

Fortunately, this particular threat is one that can be
defeated by knowledge, and I'll share a new lesson
to give you that knowledge so you can stay safe.

So keep an eye out for that email - I'll be sending it
along in the next few days.

What is "metadata" and what is a hidden risk it creates?

Welcome to the newsletter once again! How are you all today? I am great thanks!!! Lets get straight into some cool computer tips. Hope you really enjoy the interesting stories that come along with the computer tips. Its computer tips with a bit of a twist!

Temporarily Hide Pictures

There might be plenty of reasons that you’d need to temporarily hide your pictures on your computer and you can rest assured, it’s quite an easy and not so permanent task. If your biker buddy is coming over to update his resume, you might not want him to see pictures of your new back dolphin tattoo. Also, there’s a reason why we call them before photos as in before these get out to the public, I better hide them so nobody can see what I looked like before my diet.
The easiest way to recover your photographs after you temporarily hide them is to first put them all into one separate folder. You’re going to hide the folder but you still might want to name it something more discreet than ‘embarrassing pics’ or ‘if these get out I’m done’ just to be safe. Also make sure to create the folder somewhere where you’ll remember where it’s at or write down the location.

To hide the folder

Right click on the folder and go to properties.
From properties click on the general tab.
Then select the option to mark the folder as hidden.
Now in My Computer you can select the tools toolbar and go to Folder Options and Hide Folders.

Once your youth group coordinator or the FBI has left your house, you’ll need to:

Go back to Tools
Then Folder Options and select the Show Hidden Folders to bring your spring break debauchery files back to life.

Do you really need a registry scanner program?

In the past I have not been happy recommending any registry programs because there are so many out there full of spyware and malware. There is also nothing worse than trying a program and then getting nagged relentlessly to buy it. I HATE THAT!

Over the past two years I have been testing PC Tools "Registry Mechanic" and I am so happy with it I am seriously thinking that I could not do without it now.
It not only scans the registry and fixes it for you, it also has other optimizng tools to go with it.

Since I have installed Registry Mechanic on my main computer I have not had one single problem with it. This is hgihly unusual as my computer is working with or without me for 24 hours a day.

Transfer iTunes Content To A New Computer

I love to use iTunes to expand my music library from Ace of Base to Zamphir the Panflute artist but I shouldn’t have to make the choice of upgrading my computer or losing all the songs I’ve downloaded. In the past, carrying around your musical load would consist of loading dozens of milk crates of cassette tapes into your trunk and with technology, it shouldn’t be hard to swap your tunes in this day and age. Luckily, there are a couple ways to transfer your iTunes content to a new computer quickly and easily.
When you plug your iPod into the computer, iTunes recognizes which songs were purchased through your account and will transfer the content into your new system. On the other hand, if you’ve got songs that friends sent to you or weren’t purchased by you, iTunes won’t recognize them. Another way to transfer iTunes content to a new computer is with a removable flash drive. You can burn your content from your old computer to the flash drive and open it up on your new operating system. When you install iTunes from the flash drive, all the previous content that was on your old computer will now appear on your new unit and you can crank up the Kenny G on your headphones for some soothing relaxation.

Using Up A Flash Drive

We’ve come a long way in technology from the days of carrying around floppy disks to transfer our data. Those things were about as unstable as a pirated nuclear reactor because if you were within a mile of a magnet or tried rewriting data more than 4 times they’d become corrupted. Luckily, nowadays we’ve got removable flash drives that are more secure and conveniently hold much more data. The question still exists of using up a flash drive and precautions should be taken to ensure that your information is safe.

Removable flash drives are a great way to save documents and game information to transfer to other computers as well as backup critical information in case of a system crash. Many people choose to overwrite or reuse their data often, whether it is for transferring their files repeatedly from work or school to home or just for extra measures of safety. People have voiced concerns about using up a flash drive but many of them are designed to write a minimum of 500 times. This should give you plenty of use out of the removable flash drive but as you get longer into the writing are saving process, you might take measures of purchasing an extra flash drive or uploading your information to an online file storage site just to be safe.

Does It Cost Money To Twitter From My Cell Phone

Q: I’ve logged into twitter.com/devices and have activated my cell phone so that I can send Twitter messages from it. I realize how addicting this could be and was wondering if it cost money to Tweet from my cell phone? When I first got my phone bill, I realized I didn’t have unlimited texting so that cost me roughly $19,410 so I’d be happy if that didn’t happen again. Thanks.

A: Hope he or she said yes for all that texting and sorry to hear about your carpel tunnel. Twitter doesn’t set any price for you to tweet from your cell phone and that all depends on your phone service plan. If you have unlimited text messages, you can Twitter virtually all day long free of charge. Another great thing is that your phone doesn’t have to connect to the Internet to send the message so you won’t be using or losing any valuable minutes in that aspect. Tweeting from your cell phone is just like sending a message to your family apologizing about a bill but if you don’t have unlimited texting, you know the end result in the form of that 287 page bill at the end of the month so, as my grandfather once said, “Tweet with caution.”

Who Can See My Files When I Connect To A Public Network?

It seems like everywhere you go these days, a WI-FI hotspot is popping up. Back in the day you had to squeeze into a crowded coffee shop to get remote Internet access and it’s embarrassing when the guy next to you is browsing for Rosie O’Donnell bikini pictures and the yuppie working on his screenplay right behind you thinks you are together.

A few weeks ago I was in what could only be described as a deserted mining town – the motto on their welcome sign was “where men are men and sheep are scared—but when I fired up my laptop to get some rushed directions I had 3 wireless network options. I wasn’t too worried in this town but I’ve always wondered who could see my files when I’m using a busy shared network.
    The first answer to that question is determined on if you have a password on your computer. If you have your own login and a specific password, only you can see the files on your computer. Even your company’s I.T. department would have to take some extra steps to see the files you have saved on your C: drive. That being said, when you’re logged into your work’s network or a WI-FI spot, that network administrator can monitor everything you’re doing while online. It may seem like an invasion of privacy but they’re letting you use their network and they have to take some precautions to protect their investment. Also, they can’t see the files on your computer, just the spots your computer is visiting. As with anything, there are ways around these privacy settings for experienced hackers so take precautions…or do what that guy did in the cafe and store your Rosie O’Donnell pictures on a removable flash drive.

Google History Remains

    Some things in history will live forever, either in books or in our hearts. The Declaration of Independence, King Tut’s Tomb, and Fonzie’s leather jacket are all artifacts that are treasured worldwide. On the other hand, you might not want your Google history to be viewed by all whether you’re searching for ‘tobacco’ smoking accessories on Craigslist or risqué pictures of Mr. C.
    Some people take some pretty intense steps to delete their Google history and it still comes back stronger than ever like a weed that won’t leave your garden. I’ve heard of people not only cleaning their cookies and browsing history back to the first day they bought the computer but even reformatting their PC. When somebody told me that their Google history even followed him to a different computer, I know we were either dealing with a Glenn Close in “Fatal Attraction” situation, or the guy was logged into his Google account. Your Internet browsing history is saved to your actual computer but when you’re logged into your Google account, they store your web history wherever you log in for your convenience. There are steps you have to go through while logged into your Google account to actually clear that history. The easiest way to save these steps is to make sure you’re logged out of your Google account the next time you’re searching for wild pictures of Joanie…or Chachie for that matter. Just remember the big "G" is watching you.

Access Denied When Deleting Files

    My brother has had girls dump him many times and the process has become just a formality for him these days. The first time he got kicked to the curb, he vowed to change, begged for a second chance and ultimately cried vehemently. Now it’s like Seinfeld; “I hate you”, “Same here, bye”. On that same token, when you try to delete some files from your computer, they kick and scream too and refuse to go. My Brother never said to the girl who was breaking up with him: “Access denied” but your computer does every time you try to delete a certain game, song, document, etc. Hopefully, after reading this it’ll be just another thing when purging your system of programs that don’t want to go.
    The first thing you have to check for when getting access denied while deleting files is if the program you’re trying to erase is in use. You can check which files are running through your task manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL). The program might not necessarily be running in a window but if you’re trying to upgrade your audio library and cleansing yourself of your Milli Vanilli collection, you might get an error if you’ve set “Blame It On The Rain” to your email inbox notification.

To be sure your file doesn’t run in another program, go directly to it after booting up and try sending it to the recycle bin. A file that doesn’t want to be blasted into a black hole may also be set to read-only. Here's how to check:

If you right click the file
to bring up properties,
you can view limitations and settings.

Another step to break the heart of a file you once loved is to rename it and change the extension. For whatever reason the three letters after the file might be raising a red flag to your operating system that they’re important. You should also be certain that they aren’t important before banishing them forever. If you’ve tried all these and the file still returns, either it’s true love or you’ve got spyware or a virus and should run your antivirus before trying these steps again.

Import Internet Explorer favorites to Firefox

Question: I CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE! Now my Internet Explorer crashes not only when playing wizard games online, but also when just simply checking my email. I have a trusted apprentice who has recommended Mozilla Firefox ever since we tried to dramatically storm the Bastille to save the princess but I was left behind after receiving a mere level 1 stone curse and my lag time prevented me from doing a shield + attack combo. I want to heed his advice but I frequent many message boards on a daily basis and I don’t have any extra time to write down all their addresses and retype them into Firefox. Is there a way to import Internet Explorer favorites to Firefox?

Answer: Sounds like you’re level 10 frustrated but you can relax as importing your Internet Explorer favorites into Firefox is as easy as applying a block + eat combo. When you first set up Firefox, there will ironically be a setup wizard that’ll actually ask you if you want to import favorites from another browser. You can then select Internet Explorer and when you proceed to open Firefox for the first time your Gandolf fan club and other sites will be there.

If you’ve already passed through the wizard, you can still import your favorites by:

Open your Firefox browser.
Going to the file menu at the top.
Then choose Import.
Then choose the browser you want to import from. That would be Internet Explorer no doubt.

Please accept my apology for this second email. It appears I made a
mistake recently that prevented users from registering on the DCT
forum. I have corrected the error and new registrations should work as
expected. I apologize to those who went to the effort to register and
enter the contest, but were met with frustration.

For those interested in the technical explaination...

I made some changes to the registration code to prevent spammers from
completing the registration process. Unfortunately one of the
modifications was off by one line. This caused an empty profile field,
which the user couldn't even see, to throw a flag that the user
attempting to register had an IP address contianed in our IP block
list. Any such user was prevented from registering and presented with
a warning that their IP was a known spammer IP. Not good, but fixed!

Please accept my apology for any trouble my error or this emal may
have caused,

Answering 2 computer questions about my recent warning about "torrent sites"

A few days ago I sent you an email where I explained
what "torrent sites" are and why you should avoid them.
I got a lot of nice feedback from people who appreciated
the lesson, but also a couple of questions I thought I'd
quickly answer here.

The first question was sent by Monika who asked:

How can you recognize a torrent site?

Monika"

Well, if you're concerned you might stumble onto a
torrent site accidentally and put your computer at risk,
that's not a big concern. Torrent sites lure you in with
promises of "free" movies, TV shows, etc. so you're
not likely to visit one unless you're looking to get
pirated files. Just avoid sites offering other people's
copyrighted material for free and you should be OK.

Again, BitTorrent (torrent for short) is not inherently
a bad or dangerous thing, but the sites specifically
called "torrent sites" are ones used mainly to share
copyrighted material illegally, and some of those
sites will try to infect your computer, and some of
the movies or software or other downloads from those
sites will be infected with something.

The other risk I mentioned, the potential for being
sued by the film or music industry, can only happen
if you actually download and share files from one
of those sites, not just by visiting one.

The second question comes from Dzwairo who writes:

But its so easy to use and it is readily available.

Plz explain the major threats and suggest just-as-good
browsers which I could use with ease.

Internet Explorer, to make sure everyone is on the same
page here (pardon the pun) is a "web browser", which
you can think of as a vehicle to take you places on the
Internet.

Some vehicles are safer than others, and some vehicles
(cars, trucks, etc.) have better features than others.

Same thing with web browsers.

Internet Explorer is rapidly losing users to other
web browsers as people catch on to the fact that
there are better options out there. The main reason
it was "popular" in the first place is purely because
it has been included with every copy of Microsoft
Windows since the 1990s, so people used it because
it was right there, not because it was the best.

Even before the security issues with Internet Explorer
started making the news years ago, I never thought
much of it and never used it as my main web browser.

One of the problems with it is that Microsoft has
always been very bad about adopting "open standards"
which is computer speak for "let's all get along".

In other words, there are many people in the world
who think that if everybody made things (programs,
computers, etc.) that play well with each other and
which sort of speak the same language, then it's
better for you and me as computer users.

Microsoft on the other hand has always preferred to
try to strong-arm people into using their own
"closed standard" which was developed in the interest
of Microsoft, not necessarily in the interests of you
and me.

Most other web browsers, while none are perfect,
tend to be better about supporting open standards.
So that's another good reason to use them.

Switching to a new browser doesn't have to be hard
or complicated, any more than driving a new car
is that much different than driving one you've had
for years.

Sure, there are a few differences in how fast it goes,
or how it looks, etc. but they all still have a steering
wheel, a turn signal, a brake pedal, etc.

Same thing with web browsers -- the differences tend
to be more "under the hood" where most people don't
see them (like whether they support open standards
for example) but as far as using them goes, they
all work the same basic way.

So what to get, and where to get them?

Well, I've always been a fan of Mozilla Firefox,
which is a free download from www.Mozilla.com

There's also Apple's Safari browser, which does
work for both Apple's Macs as well as Windows
PCs and which is a free download from
Apple.com/safari/

There's also Google's web browser, Chrome,
which you can get for free from
Google.com/chrome/

There are others as well, but those are the three I
use, in the order of how often I use them.

And yes, if you're wondering, you can have as
many browsers on your computer as you like.
And to answer the question I suspect is in someone's
mind -- no this is not an example of a torrent
file or stealing just because it's free.

These are made to be given away because the
companies which make them make money through
other means, just as I give away free lessons

sure don't make the kind of money Google or

Are "torrent sites" a danger to you & your computer?

What are "torrent sites" and are they dangerous?
In this email I'll answer a question sent in by a student
named Daniel McClutchy who writes:

"Hi Worth: Your CDs have helped a great deal

what a torrent site is? I followed a recommendation
of a co-worker and logged on to one.

My Kasperksy went crazy, not allowing me to access it.
Is this because they contain viruses?

Well Daniel, I'm glad you've found my lessons to be a help;
I always appreciate it when people take the time to let me
know how they're benefitting from my hard work!

So, let's start off by explaining what a torrent site is,
and then I'll answer your question about whether they're
dangerous.

A "torrent" is short for "BitTorrent" which is a technology
used to distribute files over the Internet. Like any
technology, it can be used positively or negatively.

Torrents can potentially speed up the downloading of
large files (downloading is the process of copying a
file "down" to your computer from another one, usually
over the Internet -- when sending a file it's called uploading).

It speeds up downloads by basically chopping up (so to
speak) a file into tiny pieces which can be sent in a "swarm"
from dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of computers
at once, each only having to send a small amount of the
file.

While there are many legitimate uses for this, perhaps
the most common use for torrents is to share pirated
movies, music and other copyrighted files.

Now I'm not going to go into a moral lecture on whether
or not it's right to take other people's content without
paying for it, but I will warn you that there are a lot
of risks involved in using the "torrent sites" you're
asking about.

Now as I said, there are many completely legal and
legitimate uses for the BitTorrent technology, but
when people talk about "torrent sites", they're
generally referring to the ones using BitTorrent
to distribute copyrighted material without paying
for it.

Those sites you do need to be wary of. Let me explain
why.

First off, many of those torrent sites are hosting
ads from less legitimate advertising networks which
tend to be used by "shady" sites such as gambling
and pornography sites.

These ads are more likely to contain "malware",
which is software (including, but not limited to
viruses and worms) designed to cause damage.
Malware is written these days to make money
by infecting computers, and so shady sites often
do this as a cheap way to make money, and they
apparently don't care whether they cause harm!

So many torrent sites are capable of infecting a
computer simply by you visiting it, especially
if you're not protecting yourself with good
Internet security software (such as Kaspersky)
and by avoiding using the Internet Explorer web
browser.

Beyond the potential risk of simply visiting a
torrent site, many of the files a person might try
to download from those sites are themselves
infected with dangerous malware.

It's well known that Apple's Mac computers tend
to have far fewer threats than Windows computers
do, but the biggest threats for Macs that I recall
from the last few years have all come from
downloading illegal copyrighted material from
sites like these.

And it's a far bigger problem for Microsoft Windows
computers!

One study I've heard of says that as much as
47% of all "zero-day malware" (one of the most
dangerous kinds) is distributed through BitTorrent!

Lastly, beyond the potential threats to your computer
posed by torrent sites and other file trading sites,
there's a very real risk to your wallet.

The recording industry, including the film and music
industries have been very aggressively pursuing
people who do illegal file sharing and are happy to
sue you for a lot of money if they catch you.

And believe me, they can afford better lawyers than
you or I!

Internet Service Providers will often shut down your
Internet connection if they detect you've been sharing
files illegally, so there's that risk too.

So my advice is to steer clear of torrent sites. There
are plenty of inexpensive ways to listen to music
and watch TV shows and movies online or offline
without exposing yourself to the risks of file trading
sites such as torrent sites.

Answering a subscriber's question about computer courses

I got an email recently from a subscriber named Chris who
had some questions about my easy computer courses. I
thought I'd share his question and my response with everyone
since I've found that usually when one person asks a question,
dozens of people are wondering the same thing. :)

Also, the final day to take advantage of my old 2010 prices
is Friday February 4th. It was originally going to be sooner,
but I ran into a few delays.

Here's what Chris wrote:
"Hi Worth. I enjoy your newsletters. I am looking at your
website to see what lessons I want to buy and I can not decide.
A relative told me to buy an Apple. None of my friends have
one, I am 62, so I am lost a lot.

I buy on ebay a lot, but don't know how to sell, I google, email,
but don't know the shortcuts on email.
You have so many lessons and some I feel I don't need now,
but maybe later. Should I just start out with your $39
monthly package?

What would you suggest to someone who doesn't catch
on like you younger folks and does not know a lot about a
computer even though I have been on it for years.

You should realize that a lot of people feel the same way
you do -- you've been using the computer for years but
there are still a lot of gaps in your knowledge and you maybe
wish you got things a little faster on your own.

That's really not your fault, and I actually made my lessons
very much with people like yourself in mind.

I worked with thousands of people one-on-one over the
years and really understand the challenges people tend to
have with computers, and I've worked on a method that
works very well for most people. I think you'll find the
lessons make sense and you'll be able to relate to them
even if you didn't grow up using computers.

It sounds like you could benefit from a number of my
courses, which is probably why you were having trouble
deciding.

I have my Safe & Easy Email Course which teaches email
basics and more advanced tips, plus security and safety advice;

basic web searching to more precise and advanced (but
not complicated) ways of searching that let you more easily
zero in on what you're looking for, safety and security,

If it was down to just one, I tell most people to start with
the Computer Basics Course as that teaches many of the
very fundamental computer skills people most need to
get around the computer easily, skills which you can apply
pretty universally no matter what you're doing. I've found
a LOT of people, including many long-time computer users
lack these skills and so it's a great place to start (and my
most popular course).

The other thing to consider is the Ultimate Bundle which
contains all of the individual courses at a significant discount.
It's a lot of information, but all my lessons are broken into
short segments so you can break it down and access the
information you need when you need it.

So you don't have to just use it as a course, but more like
a "consultant in a box" (as I've always liked to call it) and
when you get stuck or have a question, pop in the right disc,
glance at the list of lessons, click the one you want and a
few minutes later you know how to do it.

The Ultimate is more expensive, but it is a bulk discount
compared to buying the other courses individually. I also

   And as for your question about the Mac -- I think they're
great computers and very easy to use. They are a little
different if you're used to Windows, but only in some ways.
Most of the very basic principles are the same as they were
developed on the Mac OS first, then adapted by Microsoft
when they first released Windows.

Macs tend to be more consistent in how things work
from one program to the next, and from one area to the
next, which I find makes things easier to learn for anyone.
Macs also benefit from FAR fewer threats from dangerous
software, and can run Windows programs if you actually
need to (which few people do).

My Basics course actually is one of a couple of my courses
which happen to have a full set of Windows and a full set of
Mac lessons on each disc, so you can actually learn about
the Mac before getting one if you're currently using a
Windows PC.

I also give people the option within the first year of a
one-to-one exchange of a Windows copy of my courses
for the Mac equivalent (or vice versa), so you're covered
either way you go.
